Who are the alpha female artists in the Nigerian music industry

There is a common saying “females help females”. However, in the Nigerian industry, this does not seem to be the case as it seems like the females in the industry are very fiercely competitive.

Over the past few years, artists like Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Teni, Niniola, Simi, and many others have come to the fore with their music. Here, we profile two of the biggest Nigerian female acts and their .

1) Tiwa SavageThe erstwhile Mavins’ first lady started her music career as a backup artist in the United Kingdom aged about 16.

She participated in the UK X-factor contest in 2006 before signing a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in the year 2009. She then moved back to Nigeria and joined Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records in 2012.

Since then, Tiwa has gone on to feature with some of the biggest African and American artistes. She released her debut album “Once Upon a time” in 2013. She released another album to wide acclaim in 2015 titled R.E.D.

She signed a management and publishing deal with Roc Nation in 2016. In 2018, she struck gold when she won the Best African Act award at the 2018 MTV Europe Music , making history as the first woman to win the category.

She exited the Mavin Records group in 2019 and announced her deal with Universal Music Group. She co-wrote a song on ’s Lion King album in 2019 and released an album of her own titled “Celia” in 2020.

2) Yemi AladeYemi Alade came into the limelight in 2014 with her hit single “Johnny”. She had previously won the Peak Talent Show in 2009 when she was still a university undergraduate.

Known for her great vocals and linguistic versatility, Yemi Alade has become one of Africa’s biggest female acts, and has named herself “Mama Africa” as a result.

She emerged winner of the Best Female category of the MTV African Music Awards consecutively in 2015 and 2016, making her the first to win the award twice consecutively.

She was the first Nigerian female artiste to be nominated for the MTV European Music Awards in 2015, and received nominations for the BET Awards for Best International ActAfrica in 2015 and 2016. She won the Headies award for Best Performer in 2018 and 2019. Yemi Alade has repeatedly traversed borders in Africa for her musical style. Her debut studio album titled “King of Queens” was released in 2014, and two years later, she released a second album, “Mama Africa”.

Barely one year later in 2017, she released her third studio album, “Black Magic” as well as an EP titled Mama Afrique. In 2019, she released her fourth album titled Woman of Steel, and her fifth album was released in November 2020, its title was “Empress”.

I am betting that the album would not be her last. Yemi Alade is one of the most decorated female African artistes, and like Tiwa Savage, can boast of having been part of Beyonce’s 2019 Lion King album. She signed a licensing deal with Universal Music Africa and UMG France in 2019.
